firefoxFirefox is the second most renowned web browser in the world. This year, the Mobile World Congress trade-show held in Barcelona was fully immersed in orange color. Firefox had come-up with a new thing at this trade-show. This new thing is a free open-source OS for Smartphones.

There is already a lot of competition in the Smartphone market. Intel & Samsung are promoting Tizen, their own open-source OS. There are many other open-source projects already struggling to gain a share of the market. These include Maemo, MeeGo and LiMo. Well, a maximum share of around 85% has been already captured by Apple iOS and the Google’s Android. Whereas, Microsoft has managed to acquire only 3% share through its Windows Phones.

The reasons behind the demand of Firefox OS according to the company are:

  • It will decrease the dependency of carriers on Google & Apple
  • It will lower the cost to get around 2 million people on the Internet

The different feature of Firefox’s mobile OS is that it is entirely written in HTML5, unlike Android or iOS. The apps can run either from the web or even offline. It needs only half the memory utilized by an android. So these Smartphone’s would be extremely affordable, as the price is not even half of the Android Smartphones.
