Kayvon Webster injury: Broncos CB to have thumb surgery

The Broncos suffered a big blow in the secondary during their upset loss to the San Diego Chargers on Thursday.

Denver Broncos cornernback Kayvon Webster will undergo surgery on his right thumb Friday morning due to an injury he suffered during the upset loss to the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports. How Webster suffered the injury is unclear. He had already been battling shoulder issues heading into the game, according to Vic Lombardi of CBS Denver.

Webster’s injury does not appear to be season-ending, Klis reported, even with just two games left in the regular season before the start of the playoffs.

Webster, a rookie, had been playing extensively with Champ Bailey out due to injury. On Thursday, he, along with the rest of the Broncos’ defense, struggled to contain Philip Rivers and the Chargers’ offense. According to Bronco Mike at Mile High Report, the Broncos may look to reserve corner Tony Carter to take over Webster’s minutes.

Webster had a tough night.  There is no sugarcoating it, he was picked on all night by Phillip Rivers.  That last tweet by Vic seems to indicate that the rookie corner was already playing hurt.  Regardless, the Broncos are yet another man down.

Have to believe that this opens the door back up for Tony Carter to get some playing time.

The Broncos will continue to roll with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Chris Harris, Jr., as their starting corners. With games against the offensively-challenged Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders to close the regular season, the Broncos should be able to make their way to the postseason unscathed regardless of depth in the secondary.

With tough matchups looming in the postseason, however, the Broncos may need to be healthy to ensure they don’t suffer another early knockout.
